Because of its close proximity to the harbor, the Town of Rhodes has always been a very lively and flourishing place. In fact, it is the only city in the entire island of Rhodes, Greece and all the rest are considered only as towns and villages.
Yet although it has been promoted to a city, Rhodes Town still retains its historic and cultural charm. The island, being located between present day Turkey and mainland Greece, has a distinct characteristic of having both Western and Middle Eastern influences. You can just as easily spot a pointed Turkish window in a house that also has door salvaged from an old chapel.
Everywhere you look, cobblestoned streets, olive trees, palace ruins and old chapels can be seen in Rhodes Town and hopefully, it is able to preserve its essence and beauty as more decade come to pass.
