Embona

The geography of the island of Rhodes in Greece is very interesting. From an aerial view, the island’s shape resembles a spearhead and although its coastal areas are level, the inside of the island is mountainous and set on higher grounds. Because of this and the proximity to the coast, many towns and villages were built near the coast while only a few can be found in the island center. One of these villages located on the mountainous areas of Rhodes, Greece is the scenic village of Embona.

Many tourists come to the famous travel destination of Rhodes, Greece especially to see its centuries old harbor and to explore the naval villages and towns that have once flourished in antiquity thanks to its magnificent trading economy. However, the villages and towns in Rhodes remain somewhat unknown to most travelers headed that way. Well, maybe all of them except the mountainous village of Embona or Empona which is considered as a wonderful Rhodes inland village to visit.

Found half way up Mount Attavyros, Rhodes’ tallest mountain, is the Embona village. Unlike other Rhodes towns such as Afantou and Rhodes City, Embona does not possess the enchanting architectural wonders and antiquated town landmarks that both locals and tourists love so much. However, Embona has the look and feel of an old-world Greek village. Local folklore still remains in the hearts and minds of its residents and the surrounding mountains can make you feel as if the gods and goddesses of old time are still part of daily life.

Embona or Empona is also famous for its delicious meats and its fine wine which the locals continue to make a living out of like their ancestors did several centuries ago. The land up in the mountain is in fact very fertile that you can find acres upon acres of land occupied by grape vines. Food and drinks served in Embona are always home-cooked and have the authentic tastes you would not find anywhere else.

Dances, songs and festivals that stem their tradition from local beliefs of the past also continue to be performed and celebrated in Embona, making a trip to this fine Rhodes village a culturally, artistically and historically enriching experience. Traditional clothes are also worn by many and tourists enjoy wearing traditional garments themselves to feel more part of the community.

So the next time you visit the island of Rhodes in Greece, make sure to delve inland and discover the beauty of Embona way up in the picturesque Mount Attavyros.
