Environmental Sights

Although historical and cultural sights in Rhodes, Greece are both very numerous and interesting, another attraction that appeals to many people of all races and cultures in this fair Greek island are its environmental sights. The island of Rhodes in Greece continues to look very much the same as it did several centuries ago. Aside from the cobbled streets and historic architecture that remains in Rhodes, the mountain ranges, hills, forests and coasts continue to be as clean and well preserved as they were several lifetimes ago. And it is this return to nature, or rather the fact that the locals in Rhodes have never left it far behind, that makes the entire island from coast to coast such a paradise on earth.

The only city is Rhodes is the city that goes by the same name as the island which is located at the northern portion where the main port is. Rhodes City or Rhodes Town as some call it, is the most developed and populated of all the towns and villages in Rhodes. However, the city is still able to retain its natural beauty and offers some enchanting environmental sights to locals and tourists. The Rodini Park for instance is a calming sanctuary that has a stream and pond filled with water lilies and carps. Visitors can also stroll through the paths, lawns and little bridges going over the water to enjoy the natural scene.

No doubt the Valley of the Butterflies in the Municipality of Petaloudes, Rhodes is also one of the most popular environmental sights in the entire island. This area has an interesting biotope that surprising has survived the ravages that comes with time, human abuse and technological pollutions. Aside from the numerous trees, flowering plants bushes and shrubs, the Valley of the Butterflies in Rhodes is also home to a rare butterfly breed with the scientific name of Panaxia quadripunctaria. These rare butterflies seek relief from the heat of the sun in the valley every summer when they swarm all over the area and create a fantasy-like ambiance in that portion of Rhodes.

But not all interesting environmental sights in Rhodes are seen outside of the villages and towns. All over Rhodes for example, and especially in the municipality of Archangelos, you can see cute miniature ponies being used by locals or ridden by tourists. Most however are kept as pets and others are taken cared off by the government because these minuscule horses are a very rare breed indeed.

Other environmental sights in Rhodes include the Koumelou cave near Archangelos, the Kalamonia cave in Kalythies, the underground caves on Aghios Stefanos Hill, the sandy and pebbly beaches surrounding the island of Rhodes, and the towering mountains covered in olive trees, lemon trees, grape vines and other plants in the middle of the island.
