However, besides being a tourist attraction, the Rhodes island has a very strong cultural presence and all of its rich heritage has its roots in the villages. The villages in Rhodes are not very far from the city of Rhodes, since this is not a very big island and a visit to most villages can be covered by road.
Following is a list of the 5 most visited villages in all of Rhodes:
Lindos Rhodes:
This village is the second most common attraction after the main city of Rhodes. Lindos is located towards the south of the capital and the eastern coast of the Rhodes island. Lindos draws all its beauty from it’s location, which is along the slope of a hill and it has a breath taking sight just above the bay. After all the location aspects, Lindos also offers accommodation options to visitors in all budget brackets. If it’s a quick visit then there are many cafes & music bars which can be a good pit stop.
Afandou:
This village is arguably the biggest on the Rhodes island and has a brilliant surrounding of many hills. The name Afandou is derived from the word ‘Afando’ which comes from the Indonesian language and means invisible. Popularity of this village is owing to the beach which is just a kilometer away, shared the same name and is the cleanest of beaches in all of Rhodes. The cleanliness is so well maintained that this beach is awarded the EU Blue Flag.
Apolakia:
This village from the outside looks like a village built in the middle of a pit and that’s how it has got the name Apolakia. The village is some what close to the other popular village Lindos and is situated about 92 odd kilometers from the town of Rhodes. The biggest attraction of this village is the lake of Apolakkia, which offers blue waters for a cool swim in the shade of the trees around the lake. Another site worth visiting is the Temple of Agios Georgios which offer an amazing view of the beach and was built about 7 centuries ago in the year 1290.
Embonas:
Unlike all other villages on the list, Embonas is considered to be very picturesque but at the same time it has been completely isolated from all the buzz in Rhodes. The isolation is owing to the village being at the highest location on the island, the village is about 850m from sea level and is therefore the least visited by tourists. The villagers have, till date, managed to keep all the century long customs & traditions alive and these have been passed from one generation to another.
Other than the ones listed above, there are about 24 other villages that can be worth a visit. These villages are the essence of culture and the rich heritage of the Rhodean people from the past centuries.
