Sailing
Sailing is a good recreational activity for people residing in islands. The Greek islands, which are 20% of the total land of Greece, form a coastline more than 15,000 kilometers. With a climate that is Mediterranean in nature, (humid winters and warm summers) the area is ideal for sailing.
Dodecanese has three starting points—Rhodes, Kos, and Samos. Itineraries are available for tourists to enjoy the 163 islands and islets of Dodecanese. The charters offered are either week long or two weeks. As the largest island, Rhodes provides the best starting point for a sailing holiday. It is the home of one of the favorite ports in southeastern Greece—Mandraki Harbour. It is the earliest yet most picturesque of Rhodes’ three harbors. It gives a peek of what the city has to offer.
From the city of Rhodes, some of the possible same day destinations westwards are Lindos, Chalki, Simi, and Tilos. In Lindos, the bay offers a panoramic view of the village. Aside from the village’s quaint houses, the Acropolis of Athena stands out and can be seen some 500 feet above the water. Usually, the place is bustling with people during mid-morning, attracting crowds from close resorts like Phaliraki and even from Rhodes Town as well. Sightseeing is better done before ten in the morning or after five in the afternoon. The day might as well be spent sailing nearby islands.
Two of the stops eastwards are Marmaris and Fethiye. The city of Rhodes is at the northern point of the island. It is approximately 6 hour of sailing from Marmaris and 7 to 10 hours from Fethiye.
Sailing in Rhodes and the Dodecanese area is recommended for moderately experienced to advanced sailors. In summer, the prevailing wind in the area is called meltemi. Meltemi is also known as northern winds brought about by a high pressure system over the Balkan/Hungary area and relatively low pressure system over Turkey. It results to harsh sailing conditions but it has its advantages like low humidity and good visibility. It is on its full force during July and August so sailing north can be grueling and strenuous. In spring, the meltemi wind is directed southeast and is not that strong compared to summer time. During winter, though it generally blows southeast, it sometimes goes north or south too.
Many yacht clubs provides boat designed for families and travel groups with comfort and safety in mind. Jeanneau Yachts are perfect for bareboat charters. They exhibit notable stability under sail. It also has ample storage space good for sailing holidays. Bavaria Yachts are known for its craftsmanship and high-tech equipments. These German yachts will ensure smooth sailing. Beneteau Yachts, on the other hand, has luxury as its main feature. All yachts are geared up with essential navigational and safety equipment as mentioned in Hellenic Chartering Association standards. Additional items like GPS plotters, wheel steering, electric refrigerators, and such are also present. Some yachts have extra benefits like solar panels, deck cushions, and deck speakers.
