When visiting the magnificent island of Rhodes, Greece in the Aegean Sea, don’t just limit the sights that you see to the interiors of whichever hotel or resort you are staying in. The capital and only city of Rhodes, Rhodes City, is home to some breathtaking sights worth seeing. If you visit the Old Town of Rhodes City, sometimes called by many as Rhodes Town, you’d find interesting architecture and a pervading sense of history and culture everywhere you turn. Rhodes Port and the Port Square have always been important to the city since trade and navigation is a big part of the city’s economy now and even in the early antiquities.

The surrounding streets made of cobbled stone and the intricate arches and tiled mosaics remind sigh seers that the island is located between Turkey and mainland Greece thus exhibiting a fusion of both cultures architectural sensibilities and aesthetics. Another area worth visiting is the Theotokou Chruch also in Rhodes City.

If you look up at the hill where the village of Ialyssos, with its distinctly Greek homes and other infrastructures, spread across its lush sloping greenery, you would feel as if you are transported to a time when gods and goddesses still dictate the lives and loves of mortals. The village of Ialyssos has an ancient acropolis where the remnants of the Knights and Byzantine culture still stand. And a little over the site can be seen the ancient Temple of Athena Polias standing watch over the peaceful, scenic ancient city.

Another Acropolis that is sure to be part of every sight seeing trip to Rhodes is the Acropolis of Lindos. Sitting atop a hill with the glimmering blue waves of the Aegean just beyond, this ancient Greek acropolis a magnificent sight to behold. It also features a wide, beautiful staircase and a temple to the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena.

If you want to do some nature sight seeing, then the Valley of the Butterflies in Rhodes, Greece would appease your longing for the outdoors and wildlife. This area is like a bubble in time, featuring unique plant and wildlife that remain preserved and flourishing in the midst of 21st century’s ravages in nature. Butterfly lovers would never want to leave this spot, but aside from those ephemeral winged creatures, the Valley of the Butterflies also has some majestic waterfalls, streams, hills, forests and cliffs worth exploring.

For more historic sights, the Palace of the Grand Master, Filermos Hills, Castle of Kritania, and the acroplis atop the hill of Monte Smith are also must-sees. Treat your eyes and senses to a world long gone by sight seeing in ancient Rhodes, Greece.
