The Ostrich Park and Rhodian Farm

Many scientists would argue that in small islands and land areas such as Rhodes in Greece, you would find many miniature breeds or small creatures. Why? Well because the small space and limited resources in that environment would push living organisms in that island to evolve into smaller breeds that require less space and less food.

And it seems true in Rhodes. You would find miniature horses or ponies there that are way smaller than those found in mainland Greece. You would also not find bears, elephants or rhinoceroses in this small island in the middle of the Aegean. When it comes to birds, you would also expect to find small birds in Rhodes. Many would probably be able to fly long distances to reach this island in the middle of the sea while others are birds that get their food from the water. Obviously such a large and flightless bird as the ostrich would not be found in Rhodes, but strangely enough, the Ostrich Park and Rhodian Farm proves that this scientific theory does not apply in Rhodes.

The Ostrich Park and Rhodian Farm is Rhodes, Greece is just a stone’s throw away from the famous Valley of the Butterflies in the Municipality of Petaloudes. The area is rather large and spacious, and inside its confines, the majestic and largest bird species in all the world lives in the wild. Inside you would see towering ostriches, some are 6-feet high while others are even taller. Since their little wings aren’t strong or large enough to lift them of the ground, they instead have long muscular legs which they use to run fast or dig the ground with. Around 120 of these ostriches along with their chicks and eggs inhabit the Ostrich park of Rhodes.

In order to further educate visitors about these magnificent animals, the park and farm also set up a viewing room in the premises where guests and tourists can watch videos about the life cycle and characteristics of ostriches. They also have a playground for kids to enjoy themselves in, a snack bar for the family, and a souvenir shop for tourists and visitors.

But the Rhodian Farm does not simply have ostriches. This Rhodian environmental facility also houses other creatures such as camels, donkeys, goats, deers, ponies and smaller bird species which guests are sure to love to see in a natural setting anytime they visit Rhodes, Greece.
